World Water Day

22 March,2011.The IES Alquipir secondary school organised events in order to celebrate de Water World Day
(see the ppt file here)

ICE-SKATING IN ELCHE

Our students from 1st year of Compulsory Secundary Education, together with three teachers from our school, went to Elche’s Squash Club to spend the day in order to do some ice-skating. This artificial ice rink is covered and it can be visited all year long.

This school trip was very exciting for them because they do not have the opportunity to do ice-skating in our region due to our warm weather. What is more, some of them have never skated before and it was a big challenge for them.

Firstly, they received a short instruction for the correct use of the ice-rink. Then after wearing their skates, their P.E. teachers told them a few tips to skate properly and off they went to enjoy the experience.
At the beginning most of them never missed the handrail while skating. However, after a while they got more confident. At the end they even played a game getting the ‘snow’ produced in the ice-rink with some plastic containers in order to throw snow balls to each other.

They all enjoyed very much this school trip and even though they ended up very tired, they did not want to come back. We are sure that now our students will not fotget that doing sports can be fun and it is a good way to keep healthy.

Visit to Hollókő - Hungary

In October we organised a trip by bus as an award for students who have won first or second position on the art competition called: „Healthy school, schools in the future.” There were sixteen students altogether. We visited to Hollókő, a little, beautiful village which is part of the world heritage. Then we saw the paleontological museum in Ipolytarnóc. It is situated in one of our National Park. We took a short walking tour and we could see many fossils, footprints of different animals from antient time. This event was very enjoyable for all of us.

Faial Cookbooks

Students from our school made a collection of culinary recipes typical from Faial island. The collection was made from books and by collecting data from their family and friends. Since these students are from different villages, all these information show a short amount of culinary tradition from around the island. In these books we find soup, meat and fish recipes and also desserts.

We would like to congratulate all students and teachers who were able to complete this project. Here's a photo of the books produced by each of these classes.

Local octopus recipe

Onion - medium 2
Garlic - 2 or 3 cloves
Lard – QB
Olive oil – QB
Paprika - to taste
Jamaica - 4 / 5 balls

Red pepper sauce- 1 tablespoon (full)

To prepare the recipe:
First, clean up and cut the octopus into pieces (about 5 cm long). Then, stew the onion and garlic cloves, sliced into very small pieces, in olive oil and lard. When the onion is well-done add the pieces of octopus well drained. From the beginning till the end it is cooked on low heat . Use some paprika to season and give some colour to the octopus. Add the balls of Jamaica and cover the pot leaving the octopus to cook in its own liquid. This step takes a good bit (about an hour). When the octopus is well cooked, add ½ cup of red Pico wine and ½ cup of white wine. Let it take a little taste while cooking. At the end, add the red pepper sauce let it cook a little longer. The octopus may be served with baked potatoes and tomato salad with grilled peppers, skinned cut into strips, seasoned with olive oil, vinegar and salt.
